Torah (Law) & Covenant
These two concepts are foundational to biblical theology, especially in the Old Testament, and shape how God relates to humanity.
---
1. Torah (Law)
Torah is a Hebrew word meaning "instruction," "teaching," or "law." It refers most specifically to the first five books of the Bible (Genesis–Deuteronomy), also called the Pentateuch or the Books of Moses.
- Content: The Torah contains creation narratives, the patriarchal stories, the exodus, the giving of the law at Sinai, and Moses' final speeches. It includes moral laws (the Ten Commandments), ceremonial laws (sacrifices, festivals, purity), and civil laws (governance of Israel).
- Meaning of "Law": While often translated "law," torah is broader—it is God's loving instruction for how His people should live in covenant relationship with Him.
- Purpose: The law reveals God's character and holiness, exposes sin, and guides Israel as a set-apart nation (Leviticus 19:2; Romans 3:20). It was never a means of salvation but a response to grace already given (Exodus 20:2—God redeems before He commands).
- Types of Law:
- Moral: The Ten Commandments—eternal standards of right and wrong.
- Ceremonial: Sacrifices, festivals, priesthood—pointing forward to Christ.
- Civil/Judicial: Laws governing Israel's society and justice.
- New Testament Perspective: Christ fulfills the law (Matthew 5:17)—the ceremonial law points to Him, the moral law reflects His character, and believers are no longer under the law as a means of justification (Romans 6:14; Galatians 3:24–25) but uphold it through love (Romans 13:8–10).

2. Covenant
A covenant (berith in Hebrew, diatheke in Greek) is a binding agreement between two parties, establishing a relationship with obligations and promises. In Scripture, covenant is the framework of God's relationship with humanity.
- Nature of Biblical Covenants: Unlike ancient Near Eastern treaties, God's covenants are initiated by Him, grounded in grace, and often involve promises, conditions, signs, and a formula: "I will be your God, and you will be my people" (Leviticus 26:12; Jeremiah 31:33).
- Major Covenants:
- Noahic Covenant (Genesis 9): Unconditional; God promises never to destroy the earth by flood again. The sign is the rainbow. It applies to all humanity.
- Abrahamic Covenant (Genesis 12, 15, 17): God promises Abraham land, descendants, and blessing to all nations. Unconditional in its core promise, with circumcision as its sign. Fulfilled in Christ (Galatians 3:16).
- Mosaic (Sinai) Covenant (Exodus 19–24): Conditional—blessing for obedience, curses for disobedience. It establishes Israel as God's covenant people and includes the Torah. The sign is the Sabbath. It was temporary, pointing forward to the new covenant (Hebrews 8:13).
- Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7): God promises David an eternal dynasty and a kingdom that will endure forever. Fulfilled in Christ, the Son of David (Luke 1:32–33).
- New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31–34; Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8): Promised by the prophets and inaugurated by Christ's blood. It features internal transformation (law written on hearts), forgiveness of sins, and direct knowledge of God. It is the fulfillment of the earlier covenants.
- Covenant Theology vs. Dispensationalism:
- Covenant Theology: Sees the covenants as unified expressions of one covenant of grace, with continuity between Israel and the church.
- Dispensationalism: Distinguishes sharply between Israel and the church, and sees the covenants as operating within different dispensations.
- Covenant and the Gospel: The gospel is covenant fulfillment—God's promise to be our God and dwell with His people (Revelation 21:3) is realized through the new covenant in Christ.
---
In Short:
- Torah is God's gracious instruction to His covenant people—revealing His character, exposing sin, and guiding life—fully fulfilled in Christ.
- Covenant is the relational framework through which God binds Himself to His people—climaxing in the new covenant, where sins are forgiven and God's law is written on the heart.
