1. Ecclesiology (The Doctrine of the Church)

Ecclesiology is the study of the church—its nature, marks, government, and mission. The term comes from the Greek ekklesia ("assembly" or "called-out ones") and logos ("study").

- Nature of the Church:

  - The Body of Christ: Believers are united to Christ and to one another (1 Corinthians 12:27; Ephesians 1:22–23).

  - The Temple of the Holy Spirit: The church is God's dwelling place (1 Corinthians 3:16; Ephesians 2:19–22).

  - The Bride of Christ: The church is beloved and destined for union with Christ (Ephesians 5:25–27; Revelation 19:7).

  - The People of God: A covenant community set apart for His purposes (1 Peter 2:9–10).

- Marks of the Church: The Nicene Creed identifies four marks:

  - One: Unified in Christ despite denominational divisions (Ephesians 4:4–6).

  - Holy: Set apart for God, though still being sanctified (1 Peter 1:15–16).

  - Catholic (Universal): Embracing all believers across time and place.

  - Apostolic: Built on the apostles' teaching and mission (Ephesians 2:20).

- Church Government:

  - Episcopal: Bishops hold authority (Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican).

  - Presbyterian: Elders govern collectively (Reformed).

  - Congregational: The local congregation holds authority (Baptist, Congregationalist).

  - Papal: The Pope as supreme authority (Roman Catholic).

- Mission of the Church: Worship, edification of believers, evangelism, discipleship, and care for the needy (Matthew 28:19–20; Acts 2:42–47).

- Visible vs. Invisible Church: The visible church includes all who profess faith; the invisible church consists of the truly elect (Augustine's distinction).

2. Sacraments (Ordinances)

Sacraments are sacred rites instituted by Christ as means of grace and signs of the covenant. Protestants generally recognize two: Baptism and the Lord's Supper (Eucharist). Catholics and Orthodox recognize seven.

- Protestant View: Sacraments are means of grace received by faith—not automatic conveyors of salvation.

- Catholic View: Sacraments are efficacious signs that confer grace ex opere operato (by the act performed).

- Ordinances (Baptist view): Practices commanded by Christ that symbolize faith but do not convey grace.

3. Baptism

- Meaning: A sign of cleansing, union with Christ in His death and resurrection, and incorporation into the church (Romans 6:3–4; Acts 2:38).

- Modes:

  - Immersion: Full submersion (Baptist, many evangelicals).

  - Aspersion/Pouring: Sprinkling or pouring (Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian).

- Views:

  - Believer's Baptism: For those who personally profess faith (Baptist, Pentecostal).

  - Infant Baptism: Covenant sign for children of believers (Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican).

- Purpose: Obedience to Christ's command (Matthew 28:19), public identification with Him, and entry into the church community.

---

4. Eucharist (The Lord's Supper / Communion)

- Meaning: A memorial and participation in Christ's body and blood, proclaiming His death until He returns (1 Corinthians 11:23–26).

- Views:

  - Transubstantiation (Catholic): Bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ.

  - Consubstantiation (Lutheran): Christ is present "in, with, and under" the elements.

  - Reformed/Pneumatic Presence (Calvin): Christ is spiritually present, received by faith.

  - Memorial/Zwinglian: A symbolic remembrance of Christ's sacrifice.

- Frequency: Varies—weekly in Catholic and Orthodox traditions; monthly or quarterly in many Protestant churches.

- Requirements: Self-examination and faith (1 Corinthians 11:27–29).

---

5. Repentance

- Definition: A turning away from sin and toward God—involving a change of mind (metanoia), heart, and direction (Acts 3:19; 2 Corinthians 7:10).

- Relation to Sacraments:

  - Catholic/Orthodox: Repentance is integral to the Sacrament of Penance/Confession—confession to a priest, absolution, and acts of satisfaction.

  - Protestant: Repentance is a personal response to the gospel, not a sacrament—confession to God directly (1 John 1:9).

- Fruits of Repentance: Changed behavior, restitution, and growth in holiness (Luke 3:8; Acts 26:20).

- Continual Repentance: The Christian life involves ongoing repentance and renewal (Revelation 2:5).

---

In Short:

- Ecclesiology answers "What is the church?"—the body of Christ, marked by unity, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity, organized for worship and mission.

- Baptism is the sign of initiation into Christ and His church.

- The Eucharist is the ongoing sign of communion with Christ and His people.

- Repentance is the ongoing posture of the believer—turning from sin and toward God throughout the Christian life.
