Trinity and Doctrine - 9
This warning is important and needs to be affirmed. The hypothesis clearly distinguishes between confusion/misunderstanding (which is spiritually harmless if one remains in love) and active rejection (which has serious consequences). Let us examine this with Scripture and connect it to the entire series of previous hypotheses.
---
1. Biblical Foundation: Baptism in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Jesus' command after His resurrection:
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
Notice:
Jesus did not say: "First understand the Trinity perfectly, then baptize."
Nor did He say: "Baptize only in Jesus' name" (although in Acts it is sometimes mentioned that way as shorthand).
He gave the formula of three names showing who the saving God is: the Father who sends, the Son who redeems, the Spirit who sanctifies.
Implication:
Receiving baptism means receiving God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit even if we have not yet fully understood the mystery of the Trinity.
Rejecting baptism (or rejecting this formula) means rejecting the way God fully revealed Himself in the New Testament.
---
2. Confusion vs. Rejection: A Fundamental Difference
Hypothesis: "Not knowing the Trinity is different from rejecting it." Let us examine:
Attitude | Definition | Biblical Example | Status Before God
Confusion | Does not understand the mystery, but accepts and believes | The disciples who did not understand Jesus' death (Luke 18:34); Thomas who doubted (John 20:24-29) | Accepted God does not reject those who honestly seek
Misunderstanding | Has not been taught or does not understand doctrinal formulation | The Samaritan woman (John 4); Cornelius (Acts 10) | Saved because of faith in Christ, not perfect understanding
Active Rejection | Knows the teaching of the Trinity but deliberately rejects it | The Pharisees who rejected Jesus as the Son of God (John 8:24) | Dangerous rejecting God's testimony about Himself
Conclusion: Confusion is a matter of the mind. Rejection is a matter of the heart. God sees the heart.
---
3. Why Is Rejecting the Trinity Dangerous?
Not because God is "offended" if our theological formulations are imprecise. But because rejecting the Trinity means rejecting the way God reveals Himself as saving Love:
a. Rejecting the Trinity means rejecting the divinity of Jesus
If Jesus is not God (only a created being), then:
Worship of Jesus is idolatry.
Jesus' blood is not sufficient to atone for the sins of the whole world (only the infinite blood of God is sufficient for infinite sin).
Salvation is not God's own work, but the work of a creature.
Jesus Himself said:
"Unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." (John 8:24)
"That I am He" (Greek: ego eimi) is a claim to divinity referring to "I AM WHO I AM" in Exodus 3:14. Rejecting this is rejecting salvation.
b. Rejecting the Trinity means rejecting the divinity of the Holy Spirit
If the Holy Spirit is not God (only a "force" or "energy"), then:
God's presence in our hearts is not personal.
We lose the Comforter (Paraclete) who is a Person.
Sin against the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31) becomes meaningless how can we sin against a "force"?
c. Rejecting the Trinity means rejecting the flow of love
Without the Trinity, God's love is not His essence, only an attribute He "chose." And more tragically: there is no flow of love from the Father to the Son to us to our neighbor. Love becomes static, not dynamic.
---
4. Connection to Baptism and Salvation
Hypothesis: "Without acceptance (rejecting), everything becomes different."
What does this mean?
Baptism is the sacrament of initiation into fellowship with the Triune God. Peter said:
"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38)
Notice: Baptism is connected to:
Forgiveness of sins (work of the Son)
Receiving the Holy Spirit (work of the Spirit)
Repentance toward God (work of the Father)
Rejecting Trinitarian baptism (by formula or substance of Father, Son, Holy Spirit) means rejecting the entrance into relationship with the God who fully revealed Himself.
Are all who are not baptized in a Trinitarian manner lost?
This requires caution:
God is not bound to the formula, but to true faith.
However, the early church knew no baptism except in Jesus' name which contains the power of the Trinity.
If someone deliberately rejects the Trinitarian formula because they reject the divinity of Jesus or the Holy Spirit this is a sign of a different faith.
---
5. Connection to Previous Hypotheses
Let us unite them in one final framework:
Core Hypothesis | Connection to This Warning
1. Misunderstanding of doctrine destroys faith if love is lost. | Confusion about the Trinity does not destroy rejection does.
2. Adam and Eve's doubt about God's love. | Rejecting the Trinity is a more radical form of doubt: rejecting that God is Trinitarian Love.
3. Love one another so that love may remain. | Love is still possible even when confused, but rejection of the Trinity cuts off the flow of love at its source.
4. "I never knew you" for servants without love. | Rejecters of the Trinity may still "serve" (as in Matthew 7), but they are not known because they do not accept the true God.
5. Rejecting the Trinity after knowing it is a lie. | This is the previous hypothesis directly related. Rejection is not confusion, but a lie.
6. Continue to love even when confused and judged. | Love that continues to flow is proof of the Trinity but rejection stops that flow.
7. Confusion ≠ rejection. | Trinitarian baptism is the boundary line. This hypothesis is the final warning: Do not equate those who are confused (remaining in love) with those who reject (departing from Trinitarian faith).
---
6. Pastoral Application: The Right Attitude Toward These Two Groups
a. Toward those who are confused about the Trinity (but still believe and love):
Do not judge them. They are fellow believers who are struggling.
Teach them patiently. Help them understand that the Trinity is not a puzzle, but the reality of love.
Strengthen them in love. Remind them that their faith in Jesus is sufficient for salvation.
b. Toward those who actively reject the Trinity:
Make a distinction: Did they once believe and then fall away? Or have they never believed?
Pray and bear witness but do not force.
Remind them lovingly that rejecting Jesus as God is rejecting the only way of salvation (John 14:6).
Leave it to God we cannot read hearts; only He judges justly.
c. Toward oneself:
Examine yourself: Do I truly accept Jesus as Lord and God? Do I allow the Holy Spirit to lead my life?
Do not be afraid if confused God does not reject honest confusion. But be afraid if the heart rejects because that is a sign of the spirit of antichrist (1 John 4:3).
---
7. Conclusion: A Clear Boundary Line
To be confused is human. To doubt is natural. To not understand is common. But to reject the Trinity after hearing and knowing is a different matter. Because the baptism Jesus commanded is in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Rejecting that means rejecting the way God reveals Himself as saving Love.
But a second warning (as a balance):
Do not use this warning to judge those who are confused or even those who are doubtful. Remember Thomas who doubted but was still called a disciple. Remember Peter who denied but was still restored. God sees the heart, not the precision of theological formulation.
---
Closing: The Final Line of the Entire Hypothesis
Stage | Question Answered | Biblical Answer
Beginning | Why does misunderstanding of doctrine destroy faith? | Because doctrine loses its purpose: love.
Root | What is the source of Adam and Eve's doubt? | Doubting the transcendent love of God.
Solution | Why does Jesus command us to love one another? | So that God's love may remain in us.
Warning 1 | Why are some servants rejected by Jesus? | Because they serve without love.
Warning 2 | What is the difference between confusion and rejecting the Trinity? | Confusion = does not understand but accepts. Rejection = closes the heart.
Final Line | What should we do? | Remain in Trinitarian love, love our neighbor, and do not judge those who are confused but remain in love.
Shalom, Lord Jesus, protect and bless us all. Amen. 🙏
