Trinity and Doctrine - 8
This hypothesis attempts to touch on the root problem that is often overlooked: doctrinal confusion (including the Trinity) actually stems from a misunderstanding or neglect of the core of the Gospel, namely salvation through faith in Christ. Let us examine this with the guidance of Scripture and the interconnection of all the previous hypotheses.
---
1. Why Does Doctrinal Confusion (Especially the Trinity) Happen So Often?
The hypothesis shows that this confusion is not merely because the doctrine of the Trinity is complex, but because people lose the center—that salvation is through faith in Christ (John 3:16). When this center becomes blurred, other doctrines (including the Trinity) become a burdensome puzzle.
Analogy: If someone does not know that the map is meant to lead to the city (Christ), they will be busy studying the map's details (rivers, mountains, small roads) without ever reaching the destination. Their confusion is not because the map is wrong, but because the destination has disappeared from view.
What does Scripture say?
"And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." (John 17:3)
Notice: "To know" is a relational word, not an intellectual one. Jesus did not say: "This is eternal life: that they correctly understand the doctrine of the Trinity." He said: knowing the Father and knowing Him. Salvation is a relationship, not a formulation.

2. John 3:16 as the Center of All Doctrine
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."
This verse contains four truths that serve as a lens for understanding all doctrine:
Element of Truth | Implication for the Doctrine of the Trinity
"God's love" | The source of everything is Trinitarian love. The Trinity is not a puzzle, but a description of the Father's love that sends, the Son who comes, and the Spirit who convicts.
"He gave His Son" | Salvation is God's work, not human effort. The Trinity is a collaborative work not three gods, but one God acting.
"Believes in Him" | Faith is a personal response, not a doctrinal formulation. Faith in Christ is more fundamental than understanding the Trinity.
"Should not perish... eternal life" | The ultimate goal is salvation, not knowledge. The Trinity is the path to salvation, not the goal itself.
If a person holds onto John 3:16, they will not be led astray by doctrinal confusion because they know that faith in Christ is the core.

3. The Passage "I Never Knew You" (Matthew 7:21-23) as the Forgotten Foundation of Doctrine
This is a very sharp point. Jesus said:
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and cast out demons in Your name, and do many mighty works in Your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness.'"
What did they have?
Correct doctrinal confession (they called Him "Lord, Lord").
Spectacular ministry (prophesying, casting out demons, miracles).
Knowledge of Jesus' name (they used it with power).
What did they lack?
Relationship with Jesus ("I never knew you").
The Father's will (they committed lawlessness not in a merely moral sense, but their own will, not the will of love).
Connection to doctrinal confusion:
Many people are confused about the Trinity because they have been taught that salvation is about acknowledging correct doctrine. They think: "If I cannot understand or accept the Trinity, maybe I am not saved."
Yet Jesus said: Entering heaven is not because of the correctness of your doctrine, but because I know you relationally. And that relationship is proven by doing the Father's will namely love (loving one another, John 15:12).
Ironically: Those who are busiest defending "Trinitarian orthodoxy" may be the very ones Jesus says "I never knew you" if they do not live in love. And those who are confused about the Trinity but genuinely love God and neighbor they are actually known by Jesus.

4. Connection to Previous Hypotheses
Let us unite the entire series of hypotheses in one roadmap from confusion to certainty:
Hypothesis | Problem | Forgotten Solution | Connection to John 3:16 & Matthew 7
1. Misunderstanding of doctrine destroys faith. | Doctrine must point to love. | John 3:16: God's love is the source. Without this, doctrine kills.
2. Adam and Eve's doubt about God's love. | Trust in God's providence. | John 3:16: God gave He does not withhold good.
3. Love one another so that love may remain. | Love is the proof of faith. | Matthew 7: Those who "do the will of the Father" (love) enter heaven.
4. "I never knew you" for servants without love. | Relationship > service. | Matthew 7:21-23 is a warning for those busy serving but losing love.
5. Rejecting the Trinity after knowing it is a lie. | Knowledge without love does not save. | John 3:16: "Believes in Him" not believes about the Trinity, but believes in the Person.
6. Continue to love even when confused and judged. | Love is the proof of the Trinity. | Those who love are known by Jesus even if their doctrine is imperfect.
7. Doctrinal confusion happens because John 3:16 & Matthew 7:21-23 are forgotten. | Return to the core: faith in Christ and love as its proof. | John 3:16 = source of love. Matthew 7:21-23 = warning not to lose love.

5. Why Is the Passage "I Never Knew You" Often Forgotten and Misunderstood?
Forgotten because:
The church is often busier with doctrine (what to believe) than relationship (how to live in love).
Preachers fear "reducing the enthusiasm for service" if they emphasize too much that service without love is meaningless.
Theology of salvation is often reduced to confession with the mouth (Romans 10:9) without the balance of the fruit of faith (Matthew 7:16-20).
Misunderstood because:
Some interpret "doing the will of the Father" as legalistic obedience (like the Pharisees), when what Jesus meant was love (John 15:12).
Some think this passage nullifies salvation by faith no! This passage distinguishes false faith (memorizing doctrine, busy serving) from true faith (born of love and producing love).
Paul resolved this misunderstanding:
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God... For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works." (Ephesians 2:8-10)
Faith saves, but true faith produces good works and the primary good work is love.

6. Conclusion: An Answer for Those Who Are Confused
If you are confused about the doctrine of the Trinity, or other Christian doctrines, remember:
1. Salvation is through faith in Christ, not through perfect understanding of the Trinity (John 3:16). Thomas's doubting faith was still accepted by Jesus (John 20:27-28).
2. The purpose of all doctrine is to lead you to love God's love for you, and your love for others. If doctrine makes you fearful, doubtful, or proud, you have misused it (1 Timothy 1:5-7).
3. What Jesus seeks is not disciples who can perfectly formulate the Trinity, but disciples who love one another (John 13:34-35). That is the sign that you are "known" by Him.
4. The warning "I never knew you" is not for those who are confused about doctrine, but for those who serve busily but do not live in love. Do not be afraid if you are confused but be afraid if you stop loving.
5. If you continue to love even when judged, even when confused then you have proven that the Trinity is real in your life. Because only God who is Love can enable a person to continue loving in the midst of confusion and wounds.

Closing: A Prayer for the Confused
Lord Jesus, I am confused by complex doctrines. I do not fully understand the Trinity. But I know that You love me, because You died for me. I know that the Father accepts me as a child, and the Holy Spirit dwells in my heart. I cannot explain it perfectly. But one thing I know: I want to love You and love my neighbor. Help me to remain in Your love, even though my mind does not yet fully understand. Amen.
That is saving faith not the faith that can explain the Trinity, but the faith that continues to love.
Shalom, Lord Jesus, protect and bless us all. Amen. 🙏
