Love Never Keeps Promises, Only Promises Keep Love

Love Never Keeps Promises, Only Promises Keep Love Why the Foundation of Human Love is Not Feeling, but Commitment --- Introduction Since the fall of humanity into sin, our ability to love perfectly has been tainted. Human love becomes fragile, inconsistent, and vulnerable to self-interest. In this condition, God no longer bases His relationship with humanity on easily forgotten "words of love," but on eternal covenantal promises. This principle applies not only to the relationship between humans and God but also to interpersonal relationships—including marriage. --- 1. Love Never Keeps Promises Love, in the sense of human feeling, is fluctuating. It can strengthen in times of joy and weaken in the midst of difficulty. The biblical narrative is full of examples of human infidelity: - Israel repeatedly forgot their love for God and turned to idols. - David, called "a man after God's own heart," fell into adultery and murder. - Peter, who claimed he was ready to...

The "Fig Leaves" of Modern Humanity: When Achievement, Religion, and Technology Become Coverings for Sin

Since the first humans fell into sin, their natural response was not confession but a desperate attempt to cover up. In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves to shield their shame—the first symbol of humanity’s tendency to hide moral failure behind the work of their own hands. Thousands of years later, those "fig leaves" have evolved into more sophisticated forms: glittering achievements, flawless religious rituals, or technology that creates the illusion of control.

In an era where image is often valued more than integrity, modern humans have grown increasingly skilled in the art of concealing sin. An executive donates billions to CSR while ignoring exploitative practices in their company. A church activist diligently attends worship yet harbors hatred toward others. A scientist clones humans in the name of progress while trampling on ethics. These are all variations of the same pattern: replacing repentance with seemingly noble substitutes.

The Bible firmly rejects this logic. The prophet Isaiah condemned people who "honor God with their lips while their hearts are far away" (Isaiah 29:13). Jesus denounced the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, who "strain out a gnat but swallow a camel" (Matthew 23:24). The Apostle Paul reminds us that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23)—a reality that cannot be outmaneuvered by achievement, religion, or technological sophistication.

This article will explore three common "coverings for sin" in contemporary culture:

1. Achievement as Self-Justification (When success becomes a tool to avoid introspection).

2. Formal Religion as a Spiritual Mask (When ritual replaces relationship).

3. Technology as the Illusion of Perfection (When humanity tries to "fix" sin through engineering).

The ultimate goal is not mere critique but an exploration of the solution offered by the Gospel: honest confession, saving grace, and a call to live in the light (1 John 1:5-10). For, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned, "Cheap grace is forgiveness without repentance"—and the cross of Christ invites us to radical repentance, not merely a change of masks.
