Love Never Keeps Promises, Only Promises Keep Love

Love Never Keeps Promises, Only Promises Keep Love Why the Foundation of Human Love is Not Feeling, but Commitment --- Introduction Since the fall of humanity into sin, our ability to love perfectly has been tainted. Human love becomes fragile, inconsistent, and vulnerable to self-interest. In this condition, God no longer bases His relationship with humanity on easily forgotten "words of love," but on eternal covenantal promises. This principle applies not only to the relationship between humans and God but also to interpersonal relationships—including marriage. --- 1. Love Never Keeps Promises Love, in the sense of human feeling, is fluctuating. It can strengthen in times of joy and weaken in the midst of difficulty. The biblical narrative is full of examples of human infidelity: - Israel repeatedly forgot their love for God and turned to idols. - David, called "a man after God's own heart," fell into adultery and murder. - Peter, who claimed he was ready to...

Between "Works of the Law" and "Works of Faith"

The Difference Between "Works of the Law" and "Works of Faith"

 1. Works of the Law

- Definition:

Actions performed to fulfill the demands of the Mosaic Law (e.g., circumcision, Sabbath-keeping, sacrificial offerings) in an attempt to earn justification before God (Romans 3:20; Galatians 2:16).

- The Problem:

  - Treats salvation as a human achievement rather than a gift (Ephesians 2:8–9).

  - Focuses on external compliance without heart transformation (Matthew 23:25–28).

  - Proves humanity’s inability to meet God’s standard (Romans 3:23).

 2. Works of Faith

- Definition:

Actions that flow from living faith in Christ, as a response to grace (James 2:17–18; Galatians 5:6). Examples:

  - Loving others (1 John 3:18).

  - Joyful obedience (John 14:15).

  - Humble service (Matthew 25:35–40).

- Basis:

  - Not performed to gain salvation but to demonstrate salvation already received (Ephesians 2:10).

  - Empowered by the Holy Spirit (Philippians 2:13).

 How This Illuminates the Gospel

1. Shatters the Idolatry of Legalism:

The Gospel frees us from the delusion that we can be "good enough" for God (Romans 10:3–4).

2. Reveals the Transforming Power of Grace:

True faith is never passive—it bears the fruit of repentance (Luke 3:8) without self-reliance.

3. Glorifies Christ:

Salvation is God’s work from start to finish (Jonah 2:9). Works of faith are postures of gratitude, not "entry tickets" to heaven.

Practical Example:

- The Pharisee: Fasts to be seen by others (work of the law).

- Mary: Anoints Jesus’ feet out of love (work of faith, John 12:3).

> "However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness." (Romans 4:5, NIV).

The Gospel is the good news that God saves us by grace through faith, then transforms us into fruit-bearing new creations.

Concluding Summary:

The distinction between works of the law and works of faith lies at the heart of the Gospel:

1. Works of the law represent humanity’s futile attempt to earn righteousness through ritual or moral effort, ultimately exposing our sin and need for grace (Romans 3:20).

2. Works of faith are the Spirit-empowered fruits of a transformed life, proving the reality of salvation already received as a free gift (Ephesians 2:8–10).

This truth liberates us from performance-based religion and anchors our hope in Christ alone. The Gospel declares that God justifies the ungodly (Romans 4:5), then sanctifies them to live from love, not for love. Legalism asks, "What must I do?" Grace proclaims, "It is finished!"—and calls us to walk in the good works God prepared beforehand (John 19:30; Ephesians 2:10).

Final Thought:

> "The Law says, ‘Do this,’ and it is never done. Grace says, ‘Believe in this,’ and everything is already done."

> —Martin Luther

Thus, the Gospel is not a moral improvement program but a resurrection announcement: Christ’s righteousness for us ignites Christ’s life within us.

God Bless
