Trinity and Doctrine - 3
**Correcting Our Understanding of "Doctrine"**
**Hypothesis:** If doctrine is understood merely as knowledge about God (even correct knowledge), without its primary function as a path toward an encounter with God's love, then doctrine loses its life. This is what Jesus criticized in the Pharisees:
*"You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life."* (John 5:39-40)
This verse is remarkable: Scripture (doctrine) points to Jesus, but they stopped at the pointer and never came to "the One pointed to." Doctrine became a stumbling block, not a ladder.
**Doctrine in the Bible: Not "Mere Knowledge"**
Scripture itself never separates doctrine from relationship and transformation. Observe:
**1. Doctrine in the Old Testament = "The Way" (Derek)**
Psalm 119:105: *"Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path."*
- The function of doctrine is not to enrich the intellect, but to illuminate the path so that feet may walk toward God.
**2. Didaskalia (Teaching) in the New Testament**
Paul says to Timothy:
*"The goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith."* (1 Timothy 1:5)
In other words: correct doctrine always produces love. If a teaching does not produce love for God and neighbor, then that teaching has lost its purpose — even if it is formally "orthodox."
**3. The Danger of "Holding to Doctrine but Denying Its Power"**
Paul warns that in the last days there will be people who are outwardly "godly":
*"They have a form of godliness but deny its power."* (2 Timothy 3:5)
What is the "power" of godliness? A transformative encounter with the living God. Without that, doctrine becomes an empty "form."
**Consequences: Doctrinal Confusion Leads to Deception**
**Hypothesis:** *"Those who are confused about doctrine and cannot find a way out through God's love are at risk of being led astray."*
Scripture affirms this:
*"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him... See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world, rather than on Christ."* (Colossians 2:6-8)
Paul does not reject teaching (doctrine), but distinguishes between:
- Doctrine that points to Christ → living in Him.
- Doctrine that stops at itself → captivates and confuses.
When someone is confused by conflicting doctrines (e.g., predestination vs. human responsibility; salvation by faith vs. the need for good works), and cannot find a "way out" — that is, returning to Christ's love as the center — then they can be led astray. Not because the doctrine is wrong, but because they are using doctrine in the wrong way: as a "map" they study without ever walking toward the destination.
**Analogy**
- Doctrine is like a map. A correct map is very useful. But if someone only studies the map, compares different maps, even memorizes the details — but never walks toward the intended city — they remain lost. Even more tragically: they might feel safe because they "know the way," yet have never taken a single step.
- God's love is the city itself. No map can replace an encounter with the living God.
**Jesus' Most Heart-Wrenching Warning**
Not for those who don't know doctrine, but for those who are busy with doctrine and ministry yet miss the core:
*"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from Me, you evildoers!'"* (Matthew 7:22-23)
These people were correct in doctrine (they prophesied, cast out demons, performed miracles — all of which require "correct knowledge" of Jesus' name), yet Jesus did not know them. Why? Because they used doctrine for power and recognition, not to abide in His love.
**Final Conclusion About Doctrine**
**Distinction:**
**Doctrine as "Knowledge about God"**
- Stops at theological formulations
- Compares and judges
- Generates debate and division
- Makes people "know a lot"
- Risks confusing and misleading if not accompanied by relationship
**Doctrine as "Guidance Toward an Encounter with God's Love"**
- Leads to worship
- Humbles the heart and produces love
- Generates fellowship and joy
- Makes people "know God"
- Saves because it leads to the Source of life
**One Closing Question (for Self-Examination)**
*Has the doctrine I have been studying made me love God and my neighbor more, or the opposite?*
Because the ultimate goal of all doctrine is not abstract truth, but an encounter with the personal Truth — that is, Christ Himself.
